St George’s out to upset odds against unbeaten leaders Village
St George’s will be aiming to get back to winning ways by causing a shock at home to unbeaten Premier Division leaders North Village at Wellington Oval today (3pm).
The pickings have been lean lately for St George’s whose last victory came in a 3-1 triumph at home to Somerset Trojans on October 28.
Since then they have struggled on the road having been held to a 1-1 stalemate against promoted Young Men’s Social Club before suffering a humbling 5-0 thrashing away to Dandy Town in their previous two league outings.
Despite his team’s recent dip in form, St George’s coach Jarreau Hayward says his players are up for the task and is confident they can achieve a favourable result against a rampant Village side who hold a six-point advantage over nearest rivals Paget at the summit.
“Village are in great form right now, but we accept that challenge,” he told The Royal Gazette. “We are confident we can get a result, it will be about execution, passion and focus.”
Even though the visitors are the favourites to win and are on a high having edged Devonshire Cougars 1-0 in their previous outing in the Dudley Eve Trophy final at Somerset Cricket Club on November 11, Village coach Kenny Thompson is not taking the hosts for granted.
“It’s our first match since the Dudley Eve Cup success and the team is prepared to put in a focused effort against St George’s,” he said.
“They are a team that deserves respect and we’ll have to be at our best.”
Top-flight action will also be on offer at Goose Gosling Field tonight where Town will host champions PHC Zebras (9pm).
Like their hosts, Zebras are going into the clash with plenty of momentum and high on confidence having thrashed Hamilton Parish 6-1 in their previous league outing on November 4.
Tomorrow’s remaining Premier Division matches will see a fast-improving Social Club host struggling X-Roads at Police Field, Cougars are at home to Trojans at Devonshire Recreation Club while Parish host Paget at Wellington Oval.
The start of the match between Cougars and Trojans has been pushed back from 3pm to 6.30pm.
Tomorrow’s First Division matches will see unbeaten leaders Devonshire Colts host St David’s at Police Field while Boulevard will do battle with Southampton Rangers at Goose Gosling Field.
Somerset Eagles edged hosts Robin Hood 2-1 at Goose Gosling Field on Wednesday night while Wolves thrashed home side Vasco 4-0 at the same venue 24 hours later.
