Devonshire Cougars roared back to thrash Somerset in a high-scoring Premier Division encounter at Devonshire Recreation Club on Sunday night.

Former Trojan Simeon Burrows and Domico Coddington both scored twice, Elisha Darrell came up with a goal to rival Manchester United striker Alejandro Garnacho’s overhead kick earlier in the day against Everton, with Demetre Daniels also on the scorsheet. Jaz Ratteray -Smith and Haile Eve replied for Trojans.

Cougars coach Kwame Steede was pleased to see his team get back to winning ways in their first outing since losing to North Village in the Dudley Eve Trophy final.

“We needed to bounce back as it was a hard loss for us in the final,” he said. ”Sometimes after that the morale can be down but to get a performance tonight was much needed.

“We took our chances but overall we could have played better. We let two mistakes cost us two goals and we lapsed in certain areas but the execution was there for us tonight.”

Cougars dictated the early tempo and seemed likeliest to score first before midfielder Ratteray-Smith slotted home Paris Robinson’s pass from close range to put Trojans ahead against the run of play.

Coddington equalised from the penalty spot to leave the teams deadlocked at the break.

Burrows gave Cougars the lead for good shortly after the restart when he drilled in Zari Simmons’ cross and Darrell then extended the lead when he dispatched Coddington’s corner into the back of the net with a spectacular scissors kick.

Eve pulled one back for Trojans after running on to Jaellan Greaves’s long pass and calmly stroking the ball home, but Daniels restored Cougars’ two-goal advantage when he converted a through pass from Simmons.

Burrows then tapped in substitute Jayorie Fox’s short pass from close range to put the game beyond Trojans reach before Coddington completed a brace of his own to put an exclamation mark on his team’s impressive display.
