LeiLanni Nesbeth will be among those hoping to secure a deal at the 2024 National Women’s Soccer League Draft this month.

The Bermuda midfielder is pursuing a career in the professional women’s league in the United States and has already attracted interest from potential clubs seeking to secure her services for the upcoming season.

“I will be entering the NWSL Draft because I think as of right now, it is the best decision for me to develop as a player,” Nesbeth told The Royal Gazette. “Obviously, I have no idea what state I may end up, but I’m just excited to see how I can fit in within this league.

“I believe it’s progressing in the right direction and I’m excited to be a part of it.”

The draft will be held during the United Soccer Coaches Convention at the Anaheim Convention Centre in California on January 12.

“I’ve had some conversations thus far and hopefully a few more before the draft day,” Nesbeth added.

“I am just trying to do all I can to get myself physically and mentally prepared before preseason starts and just looking forward to seeing what the future holds and where.”

Nesbeth is still on a high after helping the unbeaten Florida State University win their fourth national title and a third in the past six seasons last month.

It was the second NCAA title for the Seminoles senior and captain who also earned four Atlantic Coast Conference titles during a remarkable college career which ended in glory after her team’s emphatic 5-1 win over Stanford in the NCAA Championship final.

Nesbeth’s athletic achievements have not gone unnoticed by her childhood club, St David’s County Cricket Club, who held a motorcade and party in her honour at the weekend.

“I thought it was amazing and it was an opportunity for my family, friends and loved ones to come together and enjoy each other’s company.

“I’m super appreciative for St David’s, Aunt Alshia, Ceble Crockwell and all parties who spent a lot of time organising everything and making it special,” she said.

“Also thank you to everyone who came down and showed support.

“It has been amazing to witness and I am forever appreciative.

“Outside of it being a way to recognise my accomplishments thus far, it was an opportunity to share laughs and smiles with some incredible people who have had an impact on my life.

“It was a way to look back and reflect on my time as an athlete and a person and go back to where it all started.”

Nesbeth also conducted a clinic for female players involved in St David’s youth programme which she took particular delight in doing so.

“The highlight for me would be working with the young children,” she added.

“It was amazing to be able to do what I love doing, which is coaching and working with young people and giving back in some capacity.

“I think the knowledge and experience that I have as a person and as an athlete is useless if I can’t give it back in some way.

“I’d love to continue to host sessions and clinics when I come back home and just want to help the young boys and girls coming after me in any way that I possibly can.

“Also like I’ve mentioned before it meant a lot to my family, so it’s always special seeing them come together and make memories together.”

Nesbeth also hailed St David’s stunning upset over previously unbeaten Devonshire Colts in the First Division Shield final at Wellington Oval on New Year’s Day.

“That’s amazing and shout out to them for their success,” she said.

“The St David’s community is filled with talent but also filled with a lot of amazing people who sacrifice a lot to help others within the community.

“It’s shown in so many ways and I’m super proud of the team and the entire St David’s community. 297 for life!”
