Robin Hood coach Detroy Smith is confident his team can spring an upset over Premier Division opponents Devonshire Cougars when the sides square off in the first round of the FA Cup at Devonshire Recreation Club tonight (8pm).

Smith is adamant the First Division promotion contenders have the firepower in their arsenal to advance to the next round.

“We are looking for an upset,” Smith declared. “We have plans on going out the Rec and marching on to the next round.

“Even though we know they are one of the top teams in the Premier Division, we know on any given day we can beat anybody.

“Our goal is to be back in the Premier Division, so testing ourselves against one of the top teams in the Premier Division is what we want to do.

“We are bringing our ‘A’ game and it should be a good match.”

Smith believes the pressure is on Cougars to live up to expectations as the firm favourites to win the tie.

“The pressure has to be on them because I have about six youngsters just coming out of the under-15s and they can play,” he added. “They are some skilful players but are still boys, so it’s a good test for them.

“Cougars are the favourites and there’s no pressure on us win, lose or draw.”

Cougars and former Hood forward Lejuan Simmons says he and his team-mates are well aware of the potential threat and, as such, are not taking their First Division opponents lightly.

“The FA Cup is built for upsets, so from the start we have to treat it like any other game in the Premier Division, and we are not going to take them lightly,” he said.

“It’s win or go home and upsets is just the beauty of the FA Cup. It’s always the unknown, the unexpected, so you have to be mentally prepared.

“Games like these are hard to get motivated for not taking away from Robin Hood. It’s just a general thing players tend to think the game is already won.

“When you come into these games it’s all the mental mindset; being ready to go and treating it like any other game up in the Premier Division.

“I feel we just have to focus on ourselves and not the opposition, and go out there to get the job done.

“It’s just another day on the job and we have to get it done and see it over the line.”
