Dandy Town brushed aside top-flight rivals Somerset Trojans to progress in the FA Cup at Goose Gosling Field on Sunday evening.

A first-half opener from Cecoy Robinson was added to after the interval by captain Angelo Simmons and Jahzardae Samuels deep into additional time, after Rio Russell had reduced the deficit for Trojans.

Having to contend with lashing rain and howling winds, both sides struggled to find any real cohesion in the opening half an hour, with Simmons the only player to go close when his curling deep free-kick from the left evaded everyone before crashing off the bar.

The match finally sparked into life in the 37th minute as a loose ball on the left side of the Trojans’ box fortuitously found its way to an unmarked Robinson who capitalised, firing an effort into the ground and past the reach of Yizharyah Williams at the back post.

Town doubled their advantage seven minutes after the restart when Robinson turned provider to drill a cross from the right to the back post to an unmarked Simmons, who shifted the ball to his right foot before lashing low past Williams.

Trojans responded superbly to that setback and reduced the deficit three minutes later as Kee-zai Cann’s cross from the left was cleared only as far as Russell, whose driven shot went through the crowded penalty area, wrong-footing goalkeeper Azir Harvey on the way in.

There was to be no dramatic Trojands comeback as Town, having missed two glaring chances, finally put the result beyond doubt with virtually the last kick of the game as Jahzardae Samuels received the ball inside the area before lifting an effort over the onrushing Williams to seal progress to the quarter-finals.
