North Village sail through to next round
North Village 3 Social Club 0
North Village adapted to challenging conditions in the second half to cruise past Social Club and advance to the FA Cup quarter-finals on Sunday.
Village head coach Kenny Thompson was pleased with the way his side controlled the tempo in that second period under blustery conditions at Bernard Park.
“We adjusted well after half-time,” Thompson said. “We had to play an extra-controlled game. We like to find a rhythm within games and in that first half we were unable to take control.”
High winds wreaked havoc on the first half, creating a very sloppy first period with neither side able to assert any dominance and both sides giving the ball away in midfield on numerous occasions.
Village created the best opportunity, with D’Andre Wainwright firing high from Jaizel Smith-Deshields’s pinpoint cross, while Social Club could not make the most of their fleeting moments as David Jones and Jomeko Mallory failed to combine and Malique Wilson struggling to get involved with the attack.
The reigning champions kept the ball more confidently and and found the breakthrough early in the second half when the increasingly involved Terryn Fray swung a good free-kick into the penalty area and Jaizel Smith-Deshields bundled it into the empty net after goalkeeper Saki Tuzo and the Social Club defence failed to clear their lines.
Social Club tried to wrestle back momentum by replacing Wilson and Josh Hardtman with Casey Hardtman and Renaldo Clacken in an attempt to shuffle the attack and bring new ideas.
However, Clacken was often forced back into a defensive position from right wing and the second Village goal came as a result of him losing his man on the back post as Wainwright, who was played through by Fray, outmuscled Callan Woolridge and squared across for substitute London Steede.
Social Club’s best opening of the day stemmed from quick thinking by Jinairo Johnston, who played it forward for Josh Hardtman with the ball eventually making its way to Mallory, who completely mistimed his strike and sliced well wide.
Village closed out the match as a contest in stoppage time when Jalen Harvey curled a beautiful free-kick around the Social Club defensive wall and past goalkeeper Tuzo.
