Unbeaten leaders Devonshire Colts are on the verge of clinching promotion to the top tier next season.

Ray Jones’s team beat Ireland Island Rangers 4-2 at Somerset Cricket Club on Saturday night and now require only three points from their remaining five fixtures to wrap up the First Division title and return to the Premier Division after a two-year hiatus.

Colts are away to lowly Somerset Eagles at White Hill Field on Sunday and Jones hopes to seal their promotion at the earliest opportunity.

“We are very excited to be on the verge of wrapping up promotion and the title hopefully in our next game,” he told The Royal Gazette.

“But our motto has not changed. It’s one game at a time and we always respect the opposition regardless of where they sit in the table.”

As for Saturday’s win away to the bottom team, Jones added: “It was a dominant performance from start to finish.

“The only downside was we were very wasteful in front of goal, which we will look to correct in training this week.”

Colts hold a commanding 13-point advantage over Southampton Rangers, who bolstered their promotion chances with a 2-1 win over fellow promotion hopefuls Robin Hood at Southampton Oval on Sunday.

Also keeping their promotion hopesalive were Wolves, who prevailed 2-0 over Boulevard at Goose Gosling Field on Saturday night.

Wolves trail third-placed Hood by one point but have a game in hand over the teams in contention for promotion, which could prove crucial in a tight race for the second spot on offer

Vasco reignited their own chances of promotion courtesy of a 2-1 triumph over lowly St David’s Warriors at Goose Gosling Field on Sunday.

Leo Burgess’s team sit in sixth, a point adrift of Boulevard with five matches left.
