Mia Fishel scores first Champions League goal
Mia Fishel continues to break new ground by scoring her first goal in the Women’s Champions League yesterday.
The 22-year-old scored Chelsea’s second goal in their 4-0 win over Paris FC as they secured top spot in their final match in group D.
Fishel showed off her strength when shoving off her marker in the penalty area to plant a powerful header past Paris goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie after good work down the left from Serbian midfielder Jelena Cankovic in the 37th minute.
Chelsea took the lead in the Stade Sébastien Charléty in the tenth minute when England midfielder Fran Kirby benefited from more good work by Cankovic to head in at the back post, with Guto Reiten and Maren Mjelde completing the rout in the second half
The victory ensured Chelsea remained unbeaten in the group stages, finishing on 14 points, three points clear of Swedish side Haecken as they attempt to win the Champions League for the first time in coach Emma Hayes’s last season in charge before she leaves to take up the head role with the United States.
Fishel has started both of Chelsea’s Champions League matches since Sam Kerr, who finished runner-up in the Ballon D’Or last year, was ruled out for the rest of the season after suffering an anterior cruciate ligament injury during a warm-weather training camp in Morocco at the beginning of January.
Chelsea will find out their opponents in the Champions League quarter-final when the draw is made in Switzerland next Tuesday. Paris Saint-Germain, Ajax, Haecken, Barcelona, Benfica, Lyon and Brann are the other teams in the draw.
Nahki Wells scored his third goal of the season in Bristol City’s 2-2 draw with Coventry City in the Sky Bet Championship at Coventry Building Society Arena.
The Bermudian, who started up front for the first time since returning from injury, found the target in the 83rd minute for City to lead 2-1 after Robert Dickie had cancelled out Tatsuhiro Sakamoto’s goal.
However, Liam Manning’s side could not maintain their lead as Ellis Simms levelled matters three minutes after Wells had put the Robins in front.
The results leaves City thirteenth in the Sky Bet Championship on 38 points.
