Nahki Wells expressed his delight after notching his fourth goal of the season and his first in four months in Bristol City’s 2-2 draw away to Coventry City in the Sky Bet Championship on Tuesday night.

The Bermudian striker scored in the 83rd minute to put City ahead 2-1 before Ellis Simms equalised three minutes later to salvage a share of the spoils for the hosts.

“I’m delighted to get on the scoresheet, of course. It’s been a while due to injury,” Wells said on the Bristol City website.

“It took a toll on me a lot more than I probably first thought, but moments like this is what really matters.

“Of course it would have been a lot better to get the winning goal, but a goal and in my opinion a really good shift and good performance is something I can try and look to build from.”

The 33-year-old was one of three changes City manager Liam Manning made to his starting XI and Wells capitalised on his opportunity with a lovely finish into the bottom corner from the edge of the area.

“It’s been a while of course and 90 minutes is something I did not expect but I knew I was fit enough and more than capable enough to put in a shift like that,” Wells said.

“I didn’t necessarily know I was getting the nod but I’m happy to get the opportunity and hopefully give the manager something to really think about moving forward and put that belief in him that I am the man to deliver.”

City dominated the early exchanges but were forced to chase the game after Coventry midfielder Tatsuhiro Sakamoto gave Coventry an unexpected lead against the run of play in the 27th minute.

“It came out of nothing as I thought we had a good start. I thought our press was good,” Wells said.

“They got an injury early and they tweaked things, which made it a little difficult for us. Once they made the change and they got a little bit of a grip on the game they went in front.”

Despite the setback, City pressed on and were rewarded in first-half stoppage time when defender Dickie headed in midfielder Gardner-Hickman’s excellent cross at the back post to leave the teams deadlocked at the interval.

“We had a strong end to the half, got back into the game and it’s a great time to score,” Wells added.

“The momentum is in our favour to come out in the second half and try and win the game.”

Bristol City appeared to have done enough to secure the points after Wells put them ahead for the first time on the night before Coventry forward Simms equalised four minutes from the end of regulation.

“It does feel like two points dropped after scoring at such a good time and then conceding not too shortly after, so a lot of disappointment in the changing room,” Wells said.

“It does seem as if it’s becoming a little bit of a reoccurring thing of late in the league and we just have to find ways to start winning games. We strongly feel we could have won that game and even could have nicked it again right at the end, so positives to take.

“If we want to climb the table and be in the position they [Coventry] are, we have to beat teams like this to try and close the gap.”

City are thirteenth in the standings, six points adrift of the final play-off spot presently occupied by Coventry.
