Vasco player-coach Leo Burgess is delighted to see his team in contention for the remaining promotion spot.

Burgess’s side are fifth in the standings on goal difference, only two points adrift of the second place with four matches to play, but rather than look ahead, he chooses to take matters in stride one game at a time.

“I’m happy to see us hanging with the pack in the league and it would be amazing to get promoted in my first season as the senior coach,” he told The Royal Gazette.

“I am taking the approach of dealing with what’s in front of us and whatever happens after that, whether that be promotion or not, we will take care of as it comes.

“We got through Ireland Rangers and now our sights are fixated on getting through Somerset Eagles.”

Vasco remained in the hunt after coming away with a convincing 3-0 win over Ireland Island Rangers at Somerset Cricket Club on Sunday.

Sean Grob scored a brace while Matthew Amaral grabbed Vasco’s other goal against the home team, who were reduced to ten men when goalkeeper Shaquille Bean was sent off in the 57th minute after picking up a second yellow card.

“I’m pleased with my team’s performance,” added Burgess, who came on as a 75th-minute substitute.

“They went out there and executed the game plan well and kept their composure. I never doubted Ireland Rangers going into the game. I know playing a team like that can always be tricky.

“For us it was about being better defensively and putting on a performance for the spectators, while getting the 3 points. I believe the team did that well.”

Two of Vasco’s remaining fixtures will be against fellow promotion contenders Robin Hood and Southampton Rangers, who both have a game in hand over Burgess’s team.

Also remaining in the thick of a tight race for the remaining promotion spot is Wolves, who came from behind to beat Shield champions St David’s Warriors 3-1 at Lord’s.

Keishen Bean gave the hosts the lead in the nineteenth minute and that advantage lasted until the 52nd minute when Keijon Butterfield scored an own goal to bring the teams level.

Morricko Iris put Wolves ahead for the first time in the 76th minute, with St David’s suffering another setback two minutes later when Sulaiman Ming was sent off after receiving a second booking.

Substitute Dane Simmons put the match beyond the reach of St David’s when he found the back of the net in the sixth minute of stoppage time.

The result meant Wolves leapfrogged Southampton into third in the standings on goal difference.

Keith Jennings’s Rangers had a bye at the weekend, while the match between fellow promotion contenders Hood and Boulevard was postponed because of inclement weather and rescheduled for Thursday night at Goose Gosling Field.

The race for the remaining promotion spot remains wide open with only four points separating second-placed Wolves from Boulevard in sixth.

Unbeaten Devonshire Colts clinched the First Division title with four games to spare courtesy of a 5-1 demolition of Somerset Eagles at White Hill Field on Sunday.
