Nahki Wells scores in shootout but Bristol City bow out of FA Cup
Nahki Wells bowed out of the Emirates FA Cup after his Bristol City side lost their fourth-round replay against Premier League Nottingham Forest on penalties on Wednesday.
Striker Divock Origi, on loan from Serie A club AC Milan, put Forest ahead in the eighth minute when he turned in defender Felipe Monteiro’s flick from midfielder Morgan Gibbs-White’s corner.
However, that lead was shortlived as midfielder Jason Knight equalised for City just seven minutes later.
Midfielder Andy King’s initial shot from distance was tipped on to both posts by Forest goalkeeper Matt Turner, but forward Sam Bell was first to react to the loose ball which he passed to Knight, who slotted home from close range.
Both teams created further opportunities in regulation and extra time but were unable to convert them, thus sending an evenly fought cup tie to penalties.
After Bell missed City’s second penalty, Wells successfully scored the third but a miss from City midfielder Anis Mehmeti was enough to consign his side to defeat.
Wells came on as a 75th minute substitute and was unfortunate not to have earned an assist when fellow forward Harry Cornick fired his cross wide late in the second period of extra time.
Forest will now host Premier League rivals Manchester United in the fifth round of the prestigious competition on February 28.
