Weekend Premier Division matches are off

Coming home: Khano Smith’s Rhode Island FC are playing two friendly matches against a League Select (File photograph)

All Premier Division football matches that were scheduled for this weekend have been postponed.

The Bermuda Football Association announced the development today, citing the need to accommodate the visit of Rhode Island FC.

Coached by former Bermuda player Khano Smith, Rhode Island are scheduled to play two friendly encounters against a Bermuda League Select on Saturday and Tuesday.

“Due to the friendly international match, Bermuda League Select versus Rhode Island FC scheduled for February 24 and February 27, all Premier Division (Week 15) matches have been postponed,’’ the BFA said.

“New dates will be confirmed once the Competitions Committee have released the updated schedule.”

Devonshire Cougars were meant to face bottom side X-Roads, while Hamilton Parish were itching for an upset against champions PHC. North Village will have enough time to reinvigorate their title challenge as their match against Paget is no longer happening this weekend.

St George’s Colts, who are fighting for a spot in the top four, now have ample time to prepare for Young Men’s Social Club, while Dandy Town were meant to clash with Somerset Trojans.

While the Premier Division is affected, First Division fixtures are going ahead.

The only change in that league sees the match between Boulevard and Somerset Eagles moved from Saturday to Sunday.

Michael Findlay, the Bermuda coach, is holding a training camp for the island’s under-23 side, who are expected to form the bulk of the team to face Rhode Island.

The American visitors are making their debut in the USL Championship, playing their home matches at Beirne Stadium, Bryant University.
