X-Roads facing relegation ahead of trip to Cougars
X-Roads will have their relegation fate sealed should they suffer defeat away to Devonshire Cougars tonight.
Ralph Bean Jr’s side find themselves rooted to the foot of the Premier Division table with just five points after picking up just a solitary victory and two draws from 14 matches.
A crushing 3-0 defeat to second-from-botton Somerset Trojans last time out left X-Roads six points adrift of them and ten points behind Young Men’s Social Club and potential safety.
Such is their perilous position, X-Roads must win their final four games to have any chance of survival and also rely on other results if they are to remain in the top flight.
Meanwhile, Cougars will be focusing on ending the season as strongly as possible after their title challenge was all but ended after a 2-1 defeat away to Hamilton Parish in their last match.
Despite not being mathematically out the race being nine points adrift of leaders PHC, a frustrated head coach Kwame Steede conceded the title was out of his side’s reach, with their main focus instead turning to the FA Cup.
“The league’s over for us,’’ Steede said after the defeat. “We’re strictly going to focus on the FA Cup as I can’t see the top two teams letting up at this point of the season.
“We choked too much so we have to have the league as preparation for the FA Cup. That’s the lovely thing about the Cup; it’s special because anybody can win it.”
