Ireland Rangers at risk of expulsion from First Division

Ireland Rangers are facing a potential ban from participating in the Bermuda Football Association’s First Division heading into their final match of the season.

The west end club have forfeited their previous matches against Boulevard and Southampton Rangers and failure to turn up for their season finale against promotion hopefuls Wolves at Bernard Park on Sunday could potentially result in the BFA imposing the sanction upon them.

According to the BFA’s General Rules for Divisional Competitions, “Any team that defaults three (3) matches during the season will be banned from participating in any further competitions relating to the division in which the matches were defaulted for the remainder of the season.”

The BFA confirmed that Ireland Rangers forfeited their match against Southampton Rangers at Southampton Oval last weekend as they were unable to field a team.

It was the second straight match Ireland Rangers has forfeited after failing to fulfil the fixture against Boulevard at Goose Gosling Field six days earlier.

When contacted, Ireland Rangers president Jermaine Saltus remained tight-lipped over the situation.

“We have decided to reserve any comment on this matter,” he told The Royal Gazette.

Meanwhile, third-placed Wolves have plenty of incentive heading into the match, where victory would see them leapfrog second-placed Robin Hood – who have already concluded their fixtures – and clinch the remaining promotion spot.

At Goose Gosling Field, champions Devonshire Colts would complete a perfect campaign with victory over Boulevard.

“We are looking forward to making history for the club and potentially for the league,” Colts coach Ray Jones said. “We have had two good sessions this week with one more Saturday evening to put the final pieces in place.

“Our preseason goal was to be promoted, and we achieved that.

“We never thought we would go 100 per cent and now that’s it’s possible.

“Overall, we want to make the club and fans proud and encourage the Devonshire Colts family to come to possibly see history.”

Elsewhere, Southampton Rangers take on Vasco at Southampton Oval while Somerset Eagles host Shield champions St David’s Warriors at White Hill Field.

Fifth-placed Southampton Rangers saw their promotion hopes dashed last weekend as a result of Ireland Rangers’ forfeit.

There are no Premier Division matches scheduled for this weekend.
