Devonshire Colts denied history after last game abandoned at half time
Devonshire Colts’ chance to create history by finishing the First Division with a 100 percent record was put on hold yesterday after their match with Boulevard Blazers was abandoned at half time on Sunday.
The match at Goose Gosling Field started in a slight drizzle but that increased to a constant downpour with puddles of water forming in all parts of the patch as the game progressed.
After consulting with the match commissioner, referee Anthony Francis abandoned the match at half time with Colts leading 1-0 thanks to a seventh-minute strike from Keino Burch.
Colts coach Ray Jones was not thrilled with the official’s decision as his young charges must now wait for the Bermuda Football Association to reschedule the match.
“I am disappointed with the game being abandoned,” Jones said.
“I understand that the pitch was waterlogged but I felt that on this type of pitch, like anywhere else in the world, we could have given it a chance and started the second half to see how it plays out.
“As it happened, the rain eased up but the decision to abandon the game was made at half time. Now, we have to wait for the game to be rescheduled when we could have possibly played the match until the end.”
Owen Darrell, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Sport was on hand to present Colts with their medals and league trophy in front of a number of former players including Shannon Burgess and Vance Campbell, with the weather failing to dampen the festive atmosphere and customary champagne celebrations
