Devonshire Colts get another shot at history
Devonshire Colts will get another shot at creating history by finishing the First Division with a 100 percent record.
The champions have long since secured the First Division trophy but their efforts to end on a high hung in final match of the season against Boulevard at Goose Gosling Field last Sunday was scuppered after the game was abandoned at half time as a result of a waterlogged pitch.
However, Ray Jones’ team will get another opportunity at creating history as the match has been rescheduled for Sunday at the same venue.
“I’m definitely happy to hear of the association’s decision to reschedule the match,” Jones told The Royal Gazette. “The abandoned match left a sour taste in everyone’s mouths.
“Now we will prepare again for the match on Sunday, starting with training tomorrow night. Hopefully Mother Nature co-operates and we can play the entire game.”
Colts led 1-0 courtesy of Keino Burch’s seventh-minute strike before referee Anthony Francis abandoned the match at half time as a result of the puddles on the pitch stemming from the constant downpour.
Jones’s team clinched the league title and promotion with four games to spare after an emphatic 5-1 demolition of hosts Somerset Eagles at White Hill Field on February 4.
“It’s a wonderful feeling to clinch the league and promotion and also a wonderful feeling to get it done as soon as we did,” former club defender Jones said.
Colts’s parish rivals Wolves clinched the remaining promotion spot to the Premier Division without having to kick a ball after Ireland Rangers forfeited the season finale between the two rivals at Bernard Park last Sunday.
Ireland Rangers are now facing a potential ban from participating in the Bermuda Football Association’s First Division after forfeiting their last three fixtures, with the BFA’s Competitions Committee set to meet to determine the extent of their punishment
