Talented teenager Rego picked for top regional tour

One of Bermuda’s brightest young tennis players is set for a whirlwind tour of Central America after having his talents recognised by the International Tennis Federation (ITF)Chris Rego’s trip of a lifetime will see him take on Central America’s best under-14 players in tournaments in El Salvador, Guatemala and Costa Rica between February 16 and March 11.He will then join up with his Bermuda teammates for their World Junior Tennis Championship qualifiers to be held in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.David Lambert, head of the Bermuda Lawn Tennis Association (BLTA), said the ITF had picked 13-year-old Rego to take part in training camps and tournaments as part of their Central American and Caribbean junior team.Carolina Vera of Suriname and Cuba’s Wilfredo Nestor Henry will coach the side.“This is a wonderful opportunity for Rego,” he said. “Chris has been recognised by the ITF for his performances and commitment.“Chris was instrumental in Bermuda retaining our under-13 Caribbean title and has dominated several league ladders on the Island. We’ve also had good reports from the Evert Tennis Academy in Florida about his progress.”Last year saw Bermuda’s Tyler Smith, who is the best Under-13 female player in the Caribbean, further her tennis education on the same tour.Both players were part of the Bermuda team which won the ITF Under-13 Championships for the first time in Trinidad in 2009. Rego, a student at the acclaimed Evert Tennis Academy in Florida, was the sole survivor of that victorious team when Bermuda defended their title last year in Curacao.He also represented Bermuda at the prestigious 49th Junior Orange Bowl International Tennis Championship, in Miami, last December.In a letter informing the BLTA of Rego’s call-up, Enrique Molins, president of the Central American and Caribbean Tennis Confederation, said; “The ITF is delighted to offer this unique opportunity for junior development via the Grand Slam Development Fund.“We wish to extend our deepest appreciation to the Grand Slam tournaments for making it possible. “
