Bermuda team for qualifiers named
Bermuda have named their tennis team to compete at next month’s World Junior Tennis Under-14 qualifiers in Dominican Republic.The boy’s team consists of Chris Rego, Billy Boyle and Courtland Boyle and will be coached by Jerome Bradshaw.Steve Bean will coach the girl’s side made up of Eva Frazzoni, Taylor Mcharg and Christina Joynes.Rego will join up with his team-mates after his whirlwind trip of Central America after being selected for an International Tennis Federation touring team.He was part of the Bermuda side which defended their Caribbean Under-13 title last year in Curacao along with Mcharg and Frazzoni.Bermuda will be up against 25 other nations from North/Central America and the Caribbean including Barbados, Canada, Cuba, Jamaica, Mexico and Puerto Rico.The qualifiers run from March 14-19 with the top two boys’ and girls’ teams progressing to the next stage.Last year’s competition, held in Trinidad, saw the Bermuda boy’s team finish 11th and the girl’s side come sixth.Bermuda Lawn Tennis Association (BLTA) president, David Lambert, said Bermuda would be up against some strong teams but was confident they would be able to hold their own.“We’re very pleased with the progress of our players and we believe they’re peaking at the right time,” he said. “I’m sure we will see some satisfactory performances from our young players in the Dominican Republic.”The team is being sponsored by Arch Re charities and the Elbow Beach Celebrity Classic.
