There will be a new female May 24 Half-Marathon Derby winner this year after defending champion Ashley Estwanik confirmed yesterday she will not be competing as she is carrying her second child. This isn’t new water for Estwanik, who gave birth to her and her husband’s, men’s champion Chris, first child back in 2009 and had to pull out of the event back then. She was back in the field just a year later, retaining the title she relinquished but will have to watch again from the sidelines this time around, although she will be involved in the newly-created relay race. While the champion won’t be claiming line honours for a third time, she has joined forces instead with three other ladies who are expecting to form a team called ‘Mummies with Tummies’.“I won’t be doing the entire race, I’m expecting a child so I won’t be defending my title although I will compete in the relay portion with three other ladies that are pregnant,” said Estwanik.“We are calling ourselves ‘Mummies with Tummies’.“It is bitter-sweet news in a way. When I had our first child in 2009 I couldn’t compete but came back strong last year, so this will give me motivation to do it again in 2012.“It will be a little bit tough to be out there not competing in the big event, but the relay will be fun and I can cheer Chris on a little bit more this time.“I can’t wait to come back and be racing again. It is killing me to not be out there.“I’m running every day but it’s not the same.”Estwanik won the women’s Derby at a canter last year and broke her own record in the process, knocking one and a half minutes off her previous best to finish in a time of one hour, 21 minutes and 58 seconds.Despite the setback of giving birth and having to regain her fitness and form, she was still far too strong for the rest of the field and finished almost six minutes ahead of her nearest rival, Victoria Fiddick.Fiddick, who won the 2009 edition of the race in Estwanik’s absence, has been tipped by the champion, along with RenaissanceRe 10-mile champions Deon Breary and Jennifer Alen, the 2011 Lindo’s to Lindo’s champion, to battle it out on the road for the title of fastest woman in Bermuda.Admitting that she won’t see the entire race, she will be keeping a close eye on her spouse as he goes for his fourth successive win, with Estwanik confirming she will be running the final leg of the relay.“I would think Victoria Fiddick would be the favourite. She is in really good shape and had a good half-marathon in New York recently, so if she can manage to stay in shape she will be right up there.“Jennifer Alen will also be close to the front, although she is more of a shorter distance runner so it will be interesting to see how she fares in this distance.“Deon Breary is really showing us all that she is in really good shape and there are some others who dust off their shoes and come out to compete.“You never know who has been training in the shadows so it all depends on the big day.“I’m going to do the final leg of the race and watch Chris by boat and drop everyone off at their spots so I will see him run.“I’ll miss his finish but I’ll see him actually running throughout so that will be fun.”
