World’s top juniors back for Bermuda tournament
Some of the world’s top juniors will descend on the Island next month for the tenth International Tennis Federation Junior Tournament. The Bank of Bermuda Foundation have again agreed to sponsor the tournament which returns after being cancelled last summer, due to difficulties finding accommodation for visiting players.Coleridge Place, Bermuda Lawn Tennis Association (BLTA) president, expects more than 20 nations to be represented at the competition which begins on June 20 at the WER Joell Tennis Stadium.Wildcard spots are available for the top four Bermudians in men and women’s Under-18 and Under-14 competitions.Place said the Grade Five event offered local players an opportunity to test themselves against world ranked juniors.“By competing in this event our juniors can earn world ranking points that can lead to earning them a scholarship,” said Place, who took over as president from David Lambert earlier this year. “For many players it will be their first exposure to an ITF summer circuit tournament.”Top local junior Chris Rego and the Boyles cousins, Courtland and Billy, will be among those flying the flag for Bermuda.“There’s going to be some good action. The competition is really keen and high,” Place added. “We’ve travelled to Grade Five events all over the world and the standard of the youngsters is amazing.”The tournament runs from June 2025. Matches will start at 10 am.
