Dear Sir,I wanted to let you know the Bermuda Track and Field Association’s point of view regarding May 24. I had been in contact with Dr. Gina Tucker since March to discuss the May 24 race. The Road Running Committee and BTFA’s concerns for the race were:n 9:30 start time ( too late).n were walkers going to be allowed to enter?n are non- locals going to be allowed to enter?n did they expect numbers to be up and did they consider extra Gatorade, water and port-o-loosn Doctors and nurses at the finish line along with with St. John’s ambulance to be able to insert IVs and administer fluids. My reply from Dr. Tucker was that they were working on getting the race started earlier (half an hour later). This has been done.Walkers were not going to be promoted. From Dr. Tucker:‘Please note that, as did many last year and years before that, non-locals have always participated (there is simply no way to prevent this other than requiring everyone to submit a copy of their passport; work permit, etc. However, there will not be any prizes for non-locals (just tokens) and they will not be aggressively marketed; they will wear different colour bibs; AND Bermuda, the economy, and her people will benefit greatly from the desperately needed tourism business that will be generated albeit small.’They are planning for 1000 runners. They had considered extra fluids. They were looking into getting a doctor at the finish line. They are also not having the usual Friday night awards ceremony. They are only giving prizes to the first three males and females. There will be no prizes for age groups winners, they will only be recognised. They stated this is due to the economic times. As for all road races they are required to send the form to the BTFA for approval before it goes online. They were aware of this but this was not done. I did speak to Dr. Tucker this evening and she said that this was an error on their part. The form does not say “This race has been sanctioned by the BTFA” as all road races should say.We certainly would not have approved tourists being charged an increased fee. We were under the impression that as in past years there would be a few tourists who slipped through the cracks but would not be openly running the race and would have signed up like everyone else.Dr. Tucker stated to me that any tourist who enters the race can not be an elite runner and if they are they will be pulled from the race.Thank you,APRIL VESEYRoad Race Committee ChairBTFA Executive
