Tennis boss holds ‘clear-the-air talks’ over Davis Cup comments
Disgruntled members of the Island’s Davis Cup team met with Bermuda Lawn Tennis Association president Coleridge Place for clear-the-air talks yesterday.Place told The Royal Gazette this week he had withdrawn the team from this month’s Davis Cup –because it was “ill-prepared” comments which did not go down well with some players and coaches.Place said on Tuesday: “To me it’s pointless in competing in something that you’re constantly going up and down in. I’m not sure what it is. Is it the coaches, the players’ commitment, do they need to get together earlier to train?”Many in the tennis fraternity claim the real reason Bermuda pulled out of the competition was a lack of funding - a contributory factor Place acknowledged in Tuesday’s interview.“We weren’t able to get enough sponsorship,” he said.Yesterday Place played down rumours that some members of the BLTA has called for his resignation and said he stood by his comments. He was due to meet members of the Association last night. The decision to withdraw from the Davis Cup has denied Bermuda the opportunity to regain their Americas Group III status. It will be the first time in many years the Island has not taken part in the annual knockout competition in which they were relegated to Division IV last year.Bermuda had been due to play in a round-robin tournament against Panama, Trinidad and Tobago and the US Virgin Island in Bolivia from June 16-18.
