Double delight for Canadian Liang

Canadian Gloria Liang did the double at the Bank of Bermuda Foundation ITF Junior Circuit Tennis Tournament on Saturday, winning both the girls’ singles and doubles Under-18 titles. In the singles final, Liang, the number two seed, defeated sixth seed American Rianna Valdes in three sets, 4-6, 6-4, 6-2.Valeds, who beat Bermudian Tyler Smith in the semi-finals, jumped into an early one set lead, claiming the first set 6-4 but this was all she would get as Liang pulled the strings for the remainder of the match. The champion took control in the second set, winning 6-4, before breezing through the third 62.Liang then teamed up with fellow Canadian Charlotte Petrick as the number one pair beat second seeds Madison Bourguignon from USA and Gabrielle Moxey from Bahamas in the girls’ doubles final, winning 6-2, 7-5. American Jordan Tucker Daigle defeated fellow countryman Daniel Shebshayevich in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3, to claim the boys’ Under-8 singles title but then lost in the doubles final.Shebshayevich moved into a 2-0 lead in the first set but Daigle fought back and continued to dictate the match. In the boys’ Under-18 doubles final, British pair Samm Butler and Toby Mitchell, ranked number two, defeated the third seeds Daigle and James Elliott from Britain 6-4, 4-6 (10-4).Local player Chris Rego won the Under-14 boys’ singles title earlier in the week.
