Bermuda teams struggle in bid for medal glory

Bermuda’s Island Games team failed to earn a single medal in the Isle of Wight yesterday as they competed in tennis, athletics, badminton, cycling, shooting, squash, volleyball and archery.But the basketball and sailng teams are still in position to match or improve on the performance of bronze medal winner Sean Trott in the half-marathon over the weekend Bermuda’s only individual medal so far. The half-marathon team also grabbed bronze.The men’s basketball team’s defeat came as a surprise after they had won gold in Aaland two years’ ago.The men and women’s tennis teams missed out on podium glory after losing their bronze medal matches against the Isle of Man.Gavin Manders and Jenson Bascome were defeated 2-0, while the women’s pairing of Tyler Smith and Jackie Lambert lost 2-1.Smith beat Eva Moynihan 6-2, 4-6, 10-6 but Jackie Lambert couldn’t get the better of Karen Faragher who won 6-4, 3-6, 2-10.In the deciding doubles match, Smith and Lambert lost 6-1, 6-3.The third set in the tennis competition is played as a tiebreaker, with the first to 10 taking the matchIn the men’s bronze medal match, Manders was beaten by 6-2, 5-7,10-6 by Bruce Wagstaffe, before Bascome lost 6-2, 6-4 to Billy Harris.Both Bermuda teams were both defeated by Menorca in the semi-finals, 2-0 and 2-1 respectively.Manders won his first set against Jesus Curiel 6-4 before losing the second 3-6. The final set saw Manders lose an 8-10 tiebreaker.Bascome also lost his semi-final game against Carlos Previ, 4-6, 6-2, 8-10.In the quarter-finals, the men’s team beat Aland 3-0 with Bascome winning 4-6, 6-0, 10-6.Manders followed that up with a 6-1, 3-6, 10-2 victory before the doubles pairing of Naim Azhir and David Thomas won 7-5, 6-3.In the women’s semis, Smith lost 6-4, 6-4 to Gemma Triay Pons, while Jackie Lambert was defeated 6-1, 7-5 by Rebeca Molero.In the doubles, Smith and Jackie Lambert beat Elena Delgado and Sandra Moll 7-6, 4-6, 10-7.The women’s team had earlier beaten Jersey in the quarter-finals as Smith won her singles match 6-0. 6-1 and sisters Jackie and Tara Lambert won the doubles 6-3, 6-1.Jackie lost her singles match 3-6, 4-6. Both the men and women’s teams had a bye in the first round.In other action yesterday, long distance runner Stephen Allen placed fifth in the 5,000 metres in a time of 16 minutes and 18.29 seconds. Sprinter Victoria Clarke came sixth in the 100 metres final in a time of 12.39 seconds. She had finished third in her semi-final heat in 12.56.Bermuda’s badminton team have finished bottom of Group B after losing 4-1 to both Jersey and Menorca yesterday.The Islanders had placed second in the Group D qualifying stage at the weekend when they lost 5-0 to the Isle of Man before picking up a 3-2 victory against Gotland.Rohan Pai won his singles match 2-1 while Mark Harguan and Rick Dorush took their men’s doubles match 2-0 and Dorush and Diane Blais won their mixed doubles match 2-1.In basketball, Bermuda men’s team followed up a 129-13 crushing of Froya at the weekend with a narrow 72-70 defeat by Saaremaa yesterday. The women’s team, who were beaten 58-52 by Guernsey yesterday, will face the Isle of Wight today.In the final of the men’s individual town centre cycle criterium, Darren Glasford came 21st, Dominque Mayho 26th, Tre-Shun Correia 28th while Neil de Ste Croix was tied in 38th position. Also yesterday, in the individual mountain bike criterium, de Ste Croix came home in 23rd position.In sailing, Brett Wright holds down first place in the Laser Standard with a first and a third to lead by three points. Rockal Evans is tied for fifth after two races with a sixth and an eighth.In the Laser Radial, Sara Lane Adderley is second after finishes of 13, 3, 4 and 8, and Jason Saints is third after coming 9, 10, 3, 6. Both sailors are on 28 points.Ross Roberts and Nelson Simons placed fifth in the 300 metres centre fire prone shooting event with 1,079 points.Bermuda’s team placed seventh in the squash competition after beating Shetland Islands 3-2 in a play-off match.The local team had lost all three Group A matches at the weekend to finish bottom of the table. They were defeated 5-0 by both Jersey and the Isle of Wight, before losing 3-2 to the Shetland Islands.In volleyball, Bermuda men’s team are fourth in Group A after losing to defending champions Saaremaa 75 -49 They also lost to Faroe Islands 75-45.The women’s team are third in Group A after beating Gibraltar 75-53. They lost their first game of tournament to lipping to a 4-1 loss against Aland 88-85.Bermuda’s Paul Harshaw finished 35th in the archery singles men’s recurve with 378 points.
