‘We’ll be even better at next Games’ Manders

Jensen Bascome: Helped Gavin Manders to take the men's doubles title at the Island Games.

Gavin Manders says he was more than satisfied with his performance at the Island Games after returning with gold and silver medals.Manders claimed gold with doubles partner Jenson Bascome with their finals win over fellow Bermudians, David Thomas and Naim Azhar, while losing the boys’ singles final to Cayman Island’s player, Panav Jha, to take the silver.Bermuda’s number one and Bascome prevailed in what turned out to be a tough match against Thomas and Azhar, 7-5, 6-4 to claim top honours. But in his first final of the day, Manders was outplayed by Jha, losing 6-2, 6-3, and tipped his hat to the winner, admitting he was the better player on the day.“It was tough to lose in the final for the gold. I have worked extremely hard on my fitness to get myself to that position but he was just better . . .” said Manders. “His offence was one of the best I’ve faced.“The guy who won the last two golds plays number two on his team for Cayman, so I’m proud of my overall performance in the tournament.“Taking home the silver was still an amazing experience that I will never forget, and I couldn’t have done it without my team behind me, cheering me on.”Manders also hailed the squad that made the trek to the Isle of Wight and promised that the 2013 Games side, to be held in Bermuda, would even better than the current team.“I’m proud of my squad and the way they competed and we were the fittest team there, winning the gold with Jenson was another thing I will never forget,” he said.“I look forward to moving forward with this team and think we have a great future together. We are all great friends off the court and will continue to help each other get better every day.“We were definitely the closest and most prepared team there. We will continue to get better every day and represent Bermuda to the fullest wherever we go.“I would like to thank everyone who believed in us and helped us along the way.”
