Trott’s delight at reaching marathon goal
Mission accomplished. That’s the way top distance runner Sean Trott summed up an impressive showing in the Philadelphia Half Marathon where he lowered his personal best time over the distance. The Island Games bronze medallist finished 22nd overall after stopping the clock with a gun-to-tape time of 1.09.38. His computerised chip time was three seconds faster.Trott said it was his intention to set a new personal best going into last weekend’s half marathon in the city of ‘Brotherly Love’.“I really wanted to get under an hour and 10 minutes and I couldn’t believe it at first when I achieved my goal,” he added. “I was just so glad to go out there and achieve my goal of setting a new personal best.”Trott described race conditions as “ideal” and said he felt comfortable most of the way around the racecourse.“The race conditions were perfect for me because the temperature wasn’t too cold ... it was probably more in the 50s on the day,” he added. “Personally, I felt really good and the miles just seemed to roll by.“I didn’t even feel like I was working that hard until the last couple of miles. It was a perfect race.”Samuel Ndereba was the overall winner of last weekend’s Philadelphia Half Marathon. The US-based Kenyan runner covered the racecourse in a time of 1.04.05.Trott, 21, got the new domestic season off to a flyer after claiming victory in the Labor Day 5K. And he has now targeted a podium display at next month’s National Cross Country Championships and also hopes to defend his Triangle Challenge men’s crown during the upcoming Bermuda International Race Weekend. However, he won’t be back to defend his Bermuda Track and Field Association (BTFA) Half Marathon crown on Sunday as he’s opted not to compete to afford himself time to recover from his recent impressive showing in Philadelphia.“I won’t be doing that race this weekend because it’s a half marathon and I just did one Sunday gone so there will be a new champion in that one,” he said.Trott, who won last year’s BTFA Half Marathon in a time of 1.15.46, said he’s satisfied with the way the season has panned out for him to this point.“I’m definitely satisfied with the season so far and the main goal is to stay healthy and injury free,” he added. “The longer you can do that then the more progress you can make in the sport and hopefully I can stay that way.”
