Top women’s runner Ashley Estwanik retained her national cross-country crown at Botanical Gardens on Saturday weekend without hardly breaking sweat. The mother-of-two obliterated the open women’s field in a time of 18 minutes and 16 seconds to finish nearly two minutes ahead of nearest rival, Tamika Williams (19:56) who finished runner-up for the second year in succession.Chris Estwanik made it a family affair as he claimed the men’s crown.Ashley’s time was 18 seconds faster than the previous time she posted in this event and overall she said satisfied with her lastest dominant display on the local running scene.“I just wanted to go out there and have a hard run and it was really good,” she said.“The course is really tough just because it’s up and down the whole time. But I kind of like that because it keeps your mind active and it was a great day for running. It was nice and cool and dry so it was good.“As far as time goes it’s kind of hard to gauge that on a cross-country course, but I was with happy with my time. I felt really strong and I was joking with someone afterwards that I was excited to see how I feel when I actually get some rest because my two kids keep me up all the time.”Kimberly McIvor (24:39) rounded off the top three in the open women’s field.Husband, Chris, romped to victory in 31 minutes and five seconds. The former US track runner’s blistering pace on the hilly course eventually took its toll on nearest rivals Sean Trott (32:50) and Chayce Smith (33:20) who rounded off the open men’s podium finishers.Estwanik underlined his dominance by hitting the tape nearly two minutes ahead of runner-up Trott.“I just maintained a consistent pace throughout and ran even splits each lap the whole way around and that was basically the difference really,” the American said. “It is a challenging course and it is easy to expend too much energy early in the race. So I tried to run very conservative in the beginning so that I could last the entire race.“This is the type of course where you have to be a strength runner to survive the hills because it’s not pretty. It’s not an easy course where you have smooth sailing, you have to grind it out the entire way.”The event marked Estwanik’s first appearance in the National Championships in four years. He also won in 2007.In the Masters division, Victoria Fiddick (20.21) and James Keyes (19.46) successfully defended their women’s and men’s titles in convincing fashion.Midge Oliver (28:19) retained her Senior Masters women’s crown, shaving some 32 seconds off last year’s time (28:51), while veteran triathlete Kent Richardson won the Senior Masters men’s division with a time of 19 minutes and 10 seconds.Berkeley Institute student Juma Mouchette won the Senior boys’ division with a time of 16 minutes and 44 seconds while Megan Berry (28:11) ran uncontested in the senior girls’ field.
