Records tumble in School relays
Four records were broken at the School Relay Classic at the National Sports Centre (NSC) on Friday as local schools battled for bragging rights.West Pembroke Primary, Victor Scott Primary, TN Tatem Middle School and Clearwater School all set new marks at the event, organised by Bermuda Pacers Track Club.West Pembroke’s Girls 4x400 metres relay team of Selah Tuzo, Destani Warner, Pria Lewis and Zekiah Lewis finished in a time of four minutes, 52.82 seconds, beating Harrington Sound by 18 seconds to claim the top prize, with Warwick Academy finishing in third.The previous record was held by Prospect Primary (4:56.77).Not to be outdone, Victor Scott Primary broke the Primary Boys 4x100 metres record, finishing the race in a time of 56.31 seconds, beating the previous record of 57.04 held by Port Royal Primary.TN Tatem Middle School girls broke their own record in the 4x100 metres with Jahtia Smith, Jaymie Darrell, Imani Byron and Kasia Li Matthews hitting the finish line in 51.63 seconds. Their previous best was 51.93.Whitney Institute were second while Sandys Middle School was third.Clearwater Middle School’s 4x100 metres team of Azende Furbert, Kionje Somner, Jared Lawrence and Stephan Dill clocked 47.48 to smash the previous record held by Saltus Grammar School (48.53).Overall, CedarBridge Academy won the Senior Schools title, while TN Tatem Middle School and West Pembroke Primary School won their respective divisions.Organiser Cal Simons said he was pleased with the day’s events that also saw the Bermuda Union of Teachers beat Bermuda Track and Field and Bermuda Police Service teams in the Services Division.“The event was a tremendous success; overall all the schools performed well and it was nice to see a few new schools come out and challenge the usual favourites at the top,” said Simons.“The children from West Pembroke, especially their girls, have a really good team and the likes of Clearwater and Victor Scott were also fast on the track.“It was good to see Paget Primary and Somerset Primary, the schools that usually have good young athletes, challenged by schools that aren’t normally in the hunt in certain areas, especially the 100 metres and relay events.“It was important for the club (Pacers) as well to go out and identify the athletes at a young age that have talent and want to be involved in the sport to join our club.”
