Open crown up for grabs as Naude puts family first
A new Open Men’s division champion will be crowned at tomorrow’s National Duathlon Championships at Clearwater, St David’s.Reigning men’s winner Evan Naude has been ruled out of this year’s Bermuda Triathlon Association (BTA) season-opener through family commitments.“Evan will not be competing this year because his wife is due to have a baby and he hasn’t been doing the training,” said race director Christine DeSilva.Past winners Jonathan Herring and Andrew Davis are expected to be in the thick the hunt for Naude’s vacant crown while the likes of Daniel Oatley, Chris Harris, John Thompson and Steven Petty could also prove to be a handful, according to DeSilva.Back to defend her Open Women’s title this year is Krystin Robinson (formerly Krystin Tobey) who could find her work cut against the likes of cyclists Joanna Shillington and Isabella Arnold.Arnold and Shillington have been in dazzling form on the bikes this season and could pose a serious threat to Robinson’s title defence.All participants in the Open Men’s and Women’s divisions will do a 5K run followed by a 30K bike ride and another 5K run.Bragging rights will also go up for grabs in the four respective junior categories 7-8, 9-10, 11-12 and 13-14 years.Kids aged seven to ten years will do a 1.25K run followed by a 5K bike ride before closing out with another 1.25K run.Junior athletes aged 11 to 14 will participate in a 2.5K run, 10K bike ride and another 2.5K run.All junior athletes will be presented with participation medals and special treats.This year’s championships features a new race course that starts and finishes at the triathlon hut opposite Gombey’s Restaurant. The transition from the run to bikes will take place behind the triathlon hut.Action gets underway at 8.15 with the start of the junior races. The Open races begin at 9.30am.
