Duffy a World Cup winner!
Flora Duffy booked her ticket to this summer’s Olympic Games in the UK after winning the Elite Women’s title at yesterday’s Huatulco ITU Triathlon World Cup event in Mexico. The Bermudian triathlete won in an overall time of two hours, 13 minutes and 17 seconds to finish 30 seconds ahead of nearest rival Pamela Oliveira of Brazil. It was the past Female Athlete of the Year Award winner’s maiden win competing at this level.Duffy, who pocketed $6,250 in prize earnings for her effort, completed the 1.5K swim in 18 minutes and 52 seconds, the 40K bike ride in one hour, 15 minutes and 17 seconds and the 10K run in 37 minutes and 53 seconds. She finished third in the swim and tied for fifth on the bike but was the first runner to break the tape.“It was hard, but I finally did it!,” Duffy exclaimed after securing her place at the upcoming Olympics. “I got to keep the finishing tape to which is the best souvenir ever!“Covered in champagne on the podium, but it was awesome! Millions of pictures taken with all the Mexican fans, I’m a celebrity here.”Mexico’s Claudia Rivas rounded off the podium finishers in the field.Last year saw Duffy place sixth at the same event. Her previous best in a World Cup event prior to yesterday’s win arrived in Lisbon in 2007 where she finished fifth.“I’m starting to tear up I’m so happy,” Duffy said. “It’s been a long road to get here. Today was a hard race and a hard course, but I think that’s what I needed to make me focus and really push. It totally played to my strengths today.“Towards the end, the bikes started to get really hot. I went through two bottles, which I don’t normally do. Then on the run, at every stop I put water on my head and water on my body.”Among those praising the top female triathlete was compatriot Tyler Butterfield who also did the Island proud in Mexico yesterday with a solid fourth place finish in the Elite Men’s field.“Congrats on your first of many wins to come,” he twitted. “Keep it rolling, loved hearing Bermuda national anthem. Well done star!”Butterfield, who pocketed $2,500 in prize earnings, covered the course in an overall time of two hours, three minutes and four seconds. He completed the swim in 19 minutes and 12 seconds, the bike ride in one hour, nine minutes and 25 seconds and the run in 33 minutes and 13 seconds.Butterfield was well off the lead pace coming out of the water but was able to make up precious lost ground with a solid showing in the cycling and running disciplines.Belgium’s Simon De Cuyper won the Elite Men’s division with Ryan Sissons and Danylo Sapunov finishing second and third respectively.Unlike Duffy, Butterfield’s impressive showing wasn’t enough to guarantee Olympic qualification but will have enhanced his chances of doing so.He now has two more chances remaining to qualify for the upcoming London Games, when he competes in San Diego, California and Madrid, Spain.Duffy, who represented Bermuda at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, will be competing with Butterfield in California next weekend but will miss the following week’s World Cup event in Spain.
