Tyler Butterfield became the seventh local athlete to qualify for July’s Olympic Games in London after producing another impressive showing at yesterday’s ITU World Triathlon Madrid in Spain.The professional triathlete cemented his slot after finishing 25th in the 65-strong Elite Men’s Field in an overall time of 1:55.40.Butterfield covered the 1500 metres swim in 19:28, 40K bike in 1:02.30 and 10K run in 32:20.The past Male Athlete of Year was among the last swimmers out of the water but did well to make up lost ground on the bike and run which have proven to be his strengths over the years.“It was a solid race fast from the gun, but was expected that way,” Butterfield told The Royal Gazette. “I was happy to be in a group out of the water and ride at the pace they chose.”Butterfield entered yesterday’s event in Spain firmly on course for Olympic qualification but was determined not to take anything for granted with so much at stake.“I needed a solid performance but nothing crazy,” he said. “I had already done what was needed to get me to London in Ishagki, Japan (7th) and Hautulco, Mexico (4th).“I have been racing hard all this year and fit in two good weeks training towards London before this race and could feel I came into this race a little tired. But I was very pleased with the day and how it went.“I got my ticket to London and that was why I was racing (in Spain) to make sure I held my Olympic start.”The Olympic male qualification simulation posted yesterday showed Butterfield as the 45th Elite Men’s triathlete to qualify.The selection process to determine the 55 qualifiers expired yesterday.With the pressure of Olympic qualification behind him, Butterfield has now set his sights solely upon London.His Olympic build-up will include a great deal of training at his Colorado base. He is also due to take part in the Philadelphia Insurance Triathlon (June 24) and possibly the Dextro Energy Triathlon in Hamburg, Germany (July 21).“Now the training starts for London and I’m very happy to be going to my second Olympics and representing such a great country is an honour,” he said.Englishman Jonathan Brownlee won the Elite’s Men’s field in Madrid in an overall time of 1:51.49.Earlier this year Butterfield claimed a maiden victory as a professional at the ITU La Paz PATCO Pan American Championships in Argentina.Also representing Bermuda in the triathlon at the Olympics will be Flora Duffy who has been listed as the 36th Elite Women’s Olympic qualifier.Duffy is fresh off two solid showings on the ITU World Triathlon scene, including a maiden World Cup win in Mexico earlier this month.The top athlete won the Elite Women’s crown at the Huatulco ITU event to book her ticket to the Games and followed that superb performance with a solid sixth place finish five days later at the ITU World Triathlon San Diego.As is the case with the men, only the top 55 Elite Women’s triathletes earned the right to showcase their talents on the Olympic stage.
