Griffith compete in first ultra marathon
Road runner Carol Griffith went beyond the marathon distance for the first time when she competed in the Niagara 50K ultra marathon at the weekend.Over a distance of approximately 31 miles, she displayed commendable stamina as she took fifth place in her age category, comfortably finishing in the top half of the women’s field and coming 109th overall in the race. There were 173 finishers.Her time was five hours, 54 minutes and 48 seconds, and she was the 30th women to finish out of 67.Griffith, a regular road runner in Bermuda, has completed 20 full marathons and ran in last month’s May 24 Bermuda Half Marathon Derby. Her run in the Niagara race, which is part of the 2012 Ontario Ultra Series, marked her first venture beyond the traditional 26.2-mile marathon distance.The 50K was won by Michel Lavoie in 3.13.14, while the first woman was Kristin Marshall in 4.04.06.
