You Go-Girl Race set for debut
Another women’s only charity race will make its debut on Sunday in Dockyard.Anticipation is growing for the first You Go-Girl Relay Race which will become the second all-female race behind the Partner Re 5k. Sunday’s race is sponsored by Oil Insurance and organised by Mid Atlantic Athletic Club. The race will involve teams of three with three legs of 2k and organised as a train where the first runner runs the whole three legs, the second person runs two legs and the third person the last leg so that all three team members finish together. There will be four divisions; family (including in-laws), corporate (members of the same company or organisation), junior (15 and under) and open as well as a both a competitive and non-competitive walk.Part proceeds of the entry fee plus all monies donated separated on the pledge form or online will be donated to the Women’s Resource Centre. As an incentive there will be a prize for the team that raises the most sponsorship money.Race official Christine De Silva admits she had wanted to organise an all women’s race for some time considering the success of the Partner Re race held in October. She noted also the way that women in particular bonded together in support of each other and of particular worthwhile causes and decided to try a relay format with all the teams finishing together.“This idea came from the great obstacle race held earlier this year called the Island Challenge which used the team concept,” DeSilva explained.“Running and walking are becoming popular forms of exercise so we are able, through this format, to attract all levels of fitness by having the 6K, 4K, 2K relay format. The Women’s Resource Centre seemed a natural fit for our charity being an all female race and it being the 25th Anniversary of the Women’s Resource Centre.”Sherrie Outerbridge of the Women’s Resource Centre said the charity appreciates the effort to assist them. “The Women’s Resource Centre is extremely grateful to the You Go-Girls Relay teams as well as Oil Insurance for selecting the Women’s Resource Centre to receive the donations,” said Outerbridge.“We’re working hand in hand with the race committee to insure that it is a rewarding day as it is the very first event put on by You Go-Girls.”Entries (online only) close today at 5pm but there will be a late entry on number pickup on Saturday between 10am and noon at the Women’s Resource Centre. There will be an additional $5 fee per person for each late entry. To register online visit www.racedayworld.com
