Carifta athletes Juma Mouchette, Rachel Fox, Kyrah Scraders and Deesa Booth led the way as Bermuda Pacers Track Club returned on Monday with 16 medals from the seventh annual Age Group Track Meet in Philadelphia last weekend.Mouchette won a gold in the 17-18 boys 1500 metres with a time of 4:08.75 and a silver medal in the 800m (1:57) and 3,000m (9:21.91). Fox won a gold in the 17-18 girls 800m in 2:21.49 while Scraders claimed gold medals in the 800m (2:14) and 1,500m (4:59.68) and Booth two silvers in the 17-18 shot (9.89 metres) and discus (23.91metres) as the 17-member Pacers team brought home eight gold, seven silver and a bronze.During the first day of the meet the Pacers secured seven medals with Tesyah Mahle Astwood and Che-Chule Dowling winning the gold and silver respectively in the eight and under 1,500m. Scraders won her first gold in the 1,500m while Mouchette won the team’s third gold of the day in the 1,500m. Jahmari Sutton won a gold in the 15-16 boys high jump as the team finished off the opening day with silver medals from Jah-Nhai Perinchief and Booth in the 15-16 boys high jump and girls shot put.All seven members were in action on day two of the competition as Mouchette set the tone by taking silver in the 3,000m as newcomers Samuel Darrell and Makayla Tucker both placed third in their 9-10 boys and girls 100m heats. Jared Lawrence was also third in his heat in the boys 15-16 100m.Tesyah Mahel Astwood brought home her second gold medal in the 800m as Dowling placed seventh in the same event. Alexia Burrows, making her first appearance, was sixth in her heat before the team collected another silver with Booth’s second place in the discus.The day finished with Jaiden Furbert-Jacobs placing second in his 400m semi-final heat and Syriah Lottimore and Zahra Wilson second and third in their 400m heat. Tesyah Mahle Astwood, Jah-Nhai Perinchief and Rachel Fox also placed second in their heats.Mouchette, Fox, Scraders, Sutton, Givonnie Hollis and Zahra Wilson all competed in the 800m finals, with Mouchette recording a personal best of 1:57.46 and Fox and Scraders both collecting golds in the 17-18 and 15-16, 800m finals. In the final event of the day for the Pacers, Syriah Lottimore placed sixth in the 11-12 girls 200m final.“Overall I’m extremely pleased with the team’s performances, particularly the young ones who were competing for the first time,” said coach Cal Simons. “They felt really comfortable competing and, of course, we had great parental support.”Some 78 teams participated in the meet.With barely enough time to repack their suitcases, some of the same Pacers athletes are flying out again today as part of a 38-member team in North Carolina to compete in the Russell E. Blunt East Coast Invitational at Duke University, the 31st time that the Pacers have appeared at this meet.Mouchette will compete in the 17-18 800, 1,500 and 3,000 metres, Scraders in the 800 and 1,500m and sprinter Kyle Webb in the 100 and 200m and 4x400m relay.The team won a record 26 medals last year, including 10 gold and Simons, who will be coaching along with Monique Lugo, Jerome Richards, Janine Scott and Norbert Simons, expects to bring back a similar number of medals. Last year four athletes were in contention for outstanding athlete.Also travelling with the team are senior Carifta athletes Rachel Fox in the 400 and 800m, Deesa Booth (shot and discus), Tyrone Oswald (long and triple jump) and Karim Creary (200, 400 m). In the 15-16 age group, Justin Donawa will compete in the long and triple jump, Jahmari Sutton (800, 1,500 and high jump) and Jordan Bascome in the 800m, high jump and long jump. Taahira Butterfield will make her debut at the meet in the 100 and 200m.Brothers David and Elisha Darrell will compete in the 13-14 age group; David in the 400 and 800m and Elisha in the 400, high jump and long jump. The youngest member ofhe team is Jade Johnston who will run in the eight and under girls 400, 800 and 1,500m.In total the athletes will compete in 90 individual events and four 4x400m relays.
