Manders still number one after Way win

Gavin Manders reaffirmed his status as Bermuda top tennis player by capturing two out of three titles at the William Way Tennis Tournament.Returning to local shores from his overseas studiess to compete, Manders claimed the men’s singles and mixed doubles but had to settle for runners-up place in the men’s doubles.“Overall, it was a long hard fought weekend for me,” said Manders. “Even though I lost the doubles, my main focus was to come home and defend my spot here in Bermuda as the best player on the Island.“I was proud to come home and see players like Neal (Towlson) and Jackie (Lambert) playing so well as I believe Bermuda tennis looks promising moving forward.“I have been training in Boston with Naim Azhar and Jovan Whitter as well who are playing good tennis, and I look forward to leading our team into international competition as I think we have a good chance to do some damage.”Manders teamed up with Lambert in the mixed doubles to devastating affect, brushing aside David Thomas and Cayla Cross 6-4,6-2 to claim the final title of the competition on Monday night. The silverware added to his singles crown he won Friday evening, beating Sam Butler 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 in a marathon match, although he admitted Butler caused him plenty of problems.“I want to congratulate Sam on a great tournament, beating Neal in the semis was not an easy path to the final, especially after Neal took out Jenson (Bascome),” he said.“Sam was the better player on the day, he was solid all around which gave me a lot of problems. He won the first set with an aggressive display of groundstrokes which I had no answer for. It was one of those days for me where nothing was really working. Consistency is what I pride myself in and I truly just couldn’t find my game.“I have been in many finals over the years and I believe the only reason I won was that I was able to stay calm and composed.“All in all, I was extremely proud of myself for staying strong mentally, and I look forward to many more battles with Sam and wish him the best moving forward.”Manders’ only defeat came in Friday’s men’s doubles final against the impressive Butler and Andy Bray who won 6-4, 7-5.“Andy and Sam just were a little too good off the return on the day and were able to edge us in both sets,” Manders said.Cayla Cross was crowned ladies’ singles champion after beating Elizabeth Stewart 6-4,6-4, while completing a double of her own when paired up with Zaire Simmons to knock off Amanda and Kim Burns, 6-2,6-2.Dennis Harris won the men’s senior singles final while Stuart Smith and Brian Way scooped up the men’s senior doubles crown and Sarah Cook and Earl Leader grabbed the mixed senior doubles title.
