Two of the Island’s well-established leading road runners came out top in the Crime Stoppers 5K race around Hamilton yesterday.Evan Naude and Jennifer Alen led from the front in the popular event and secured the men’s and women’s title respectively.Naude was part of the lead group which broke away from the rest of the field early in the race, and he quickly installed himself as the leader. After reaching the furthest part of the course, at the East Broadway roundabout, Naude, 36, had opened up a comfortable lead over the others and maintained his advantage as he pushed onwards to victory in 16 minutes 28 seconds.Kenya-born Gideon Kigotho was next home in 17.31, followed by Mantz Theron in 17.41.It was a closer contest for the women with only a few strides separating Jennifer Alen, Hilda Stoney and Victoria Fiddick for much of the race. She was pleased with her time of 19.53, which augers well for her marathon debut in New York next month. The race was also one of her last outings on the Bermuda road running scene as she, together with husband Darren Ma and their children, are soon to relocate to Singapore.Australian Stoney, who has lived in Bermuda for six years, said she would miss the Island and the running community.“I love the running culture here and how much my fitness has built up over the years. I’m going to miss the place,” she said.First women’s master Fiddick rounded out the women’s top three, coming home 10th overall in 20.16.In a juniors’ 1.5-mile race, the fastest in the 8-11 age group were: (Boys) Sajan Harvey in 9.41, Malik Joell in 10.08 and Jude Moseley in 10.27; (Girls) Selah Tuzo in 10.32, Jessie Marshall in 10.49 and Swa-Zae’ Wilson in 11.55.Fastest in the 12-15 age group were: (Boys) Daniel Oatley in 9.06, Robert Edwards in 9.33 and Charlie Keyes in 9.39; (Girls) Rebecca Harrison in 10.46, Zahra Wilson in 11.16 and Zakiyah Durham in 11.28.Winelle Simons was first in the 5K walk in 29.55, ahead of Ray Medeiros in 30.11 and Davina Dickinson in 30.44.Full results on Page 20.
