Lambert beats Gordon in Deloitte Open

Feeling strong: Jackie Lambert

By Stephen WrightJackie Lambert won the Deloitte Open women’s singles final for a second time at Pomander Gate Tennis Club on Wednesday night.Lambert defeated her NatWest Island Games teammate Caitlin Gordon 6-2, 6-4 in a match interrupted by rain at 2-2 in the first set.The 24-year-old, who beat her older sister Tara in the semi-finals, said it was a tough win over Gordon as they were both familiar with each other’s weaknesses.“Caitlin is a really good player, she’s one of my teammates in the Island Games and we’ve been training a lot together,” said Lambert, daughter of Bermuda Lawn Tennis Association vice-president David Lambert.“We both know each other’s weaknesses and try to play on that. It made for a tough game in the end. It feels good to get the victory.“It was tough but luckily before the rain hit we went back 2-2, so it was like starting again from the beginning in a way.”Lambert, who is scheduled to join David Thomas in the mixed doubles finals tonight against Erica Bove and Andrew Young, will now turn her attentions towards next month’s Island Games. It will be Lambert’s third appearance at the biennial event.“My next tournament will be the Island Games and when the guys get back from the Davis Cup we will start training together and working on our strategies and stuff,” said the 2009 Deloitte Open champion.“The last time in Isle of Wight, two years ago, I made it to the quarter-finals but Tyler Smith came away with a medal.“I feel strong but hopefully I can get stronger because there are lot of tough competitors coming down.“A lot of the matches will be played on clay courts so we need make sure we’re right up there on clay with our competitors.”In the Deloitte Open ladies’ consolation final Kathy Valdes defeated Imani Phillips in straight sets 6-3, 6-1.Earlier this week Gavin Manders defeated David Thomas in the Deloitte Open men’s singles final at Pomander Gate.Manders, who heads to Bolivia this weekend for Bermuda’s Davis Cup campaign, beat Thomas 6-3, 6-4.
