Tyler Smith’s hopes of reaching the Girls’ Under-18 Singles final were dashed after losing to Madison Harrison in the quarter-finals of the Bank of Bermuda Foundation ITF Junior Circuit Tournament.American Harrison defeated Smith 7-5, 6-1 at the WER Joell Tennis Stadium today.Harrison took control from the outset breaking Bermuda’s Smith in the opening game of the match. Smith couldn’t make the breakthrough to level matters, with Madison holding her nerve to win the first set. The second set followed the way of the first, with Smith being broken in the opening game.Smith said: “Today wasn’t one of the days I can say I played my best, but credit to her, she came out and job the job done.“Whenever you fall behind on the opening service game of the match, especially your serve that’s broken, it puts you on the back foot and I wasn’t able to overcome that in the first set.“The second set was like the first in that I got broken and from there it seemed as though I couldn’t get anything to go my way. It was always going to be a challenge in this tournament with the level of competition but I can only take the blame for the loss and look to make improvements for the next tournament I play in.”Harrison now advances to face off against the number one ranked Elysse Graci of USA, after she beat sixth seed Anjana Suresh of Canada 6-2, 2-6, 6-2.The other ladies semi-final will see Madison Appel take on Christiana Brigante.Appel of America beat China’s Mingxiu Du, while Brigante, of the USA, defeated Venezuela’s Laur Fabrizi in the quarter-final matches.
