Tyler lifts doubles title
Bermuda’s Tyler Smith bounced back from her singles quarter-final defeat earlier in the week to team up with Mingxiu Du and claim the Under-18 girls doubles title at the ITF Junior Circuit tournament at the WER Joell Stadium yesterday. The second seeded pairing of Smith and Du beat top seeds Elysse Graci of USA and Breana Stampfli of Trinidad and Tobago 6-4, 6-1.“It feels good to win this after the disappointment of the singles match a few days ago, but in the bigger picture you have to move on and prepare for your next match,” said Smith. The four players battled through the first set before a break of serve against Stampfli. That proved to be the turning point as Smith and Du went on to clinch the set.China’s Du was the chief destroyer in the second set as she kept Graci on the baseline where she was unable to use her strength and power to turn the match in her favour.Showing clear frustration in the second set, Graci might have been dwelling on her earlier match when she lost the singles final to Venezuela’s Laur Fabrizi. With Du hitting cross-court backhands to keep Graci at bay, Smith and Stampfli went toe to toe at the net as the pair traded point blank shots, both dodging ferocious volleys. In the end, however, the strategy to keep Graci away from the net paid dividends as the winners cruised to victory, taking the set 6-1.“We felt we had a good chance if we played to our best. It wasn’t a matter of saying we were focusing on this one thing but as we went through the rounds we felt we could win.“The expectations of making a final is high, but you have to really put your head down and do the best that you can in order to achieve the result you want.”Graci added: “Obviously I’m disappointed. To lose two finals in a matter of hours is never something anyone wants to do but I have to put it to the back of my mind, learn from my mistakes and move on.”Next up for Smith is another ITF event in the Bahamas next week. Also in action yesterday was Jammes Wasserman of USA who took down top ranked Shaquille Taylor 6-2, 7-6, while top seeds Robert Levine and Jorge Vargas won the boys’ doubles over second seeds Jody Maginley and Kevin Major 6-4, 6-3.
