Youngsters holding their own in Trinidad
Bermuda’s junior squash team produced a mixed bag of results on the opening day at the Caribbean Area Squash Association (CASA) Championships in Trinidad and Tobago.The team consisted of 11 youngsters, boys and girls, in three age groups Under-13, Under-15, Under-17, Under-19 in both boys and girls.Anaya Smith won his opening game in the boys Under-13 division, with a comprehensive 11-2, 11-1, 11-0 win over the hosts Rondell Campbell, before losing to Guyana’s Shomari Wiltshire 9-11, 12-10, 11-9, 4-11, 4-11.Charlotte Toogoode beat Mira Handa of Jamaica 11-6, 11-9, 8-11, 6-11, 11-8 in the Under-13 girls group, before backing up her first win with a 11-5, 11-5, 10-12, 11-7 victory over Trinidad’s Lily Lanser.In the Under-15 boys category, Dylan Pratt emerged victorious over OECS’ Geronimo Ross, 11-4, 11-2, 11-5, while Olivia Lindsey defeated the hosts Gabriella Scott 11-3, 11-1, 11-4.Lindsey, however, wasn’t able to make it two wins in two as she lost to Alyssa Mullins of Jamaica 1-11, 4-11, 3-11.Tiye Williams lost her opening match in the Under-17 girls division, going down 6-11, 8-11, 7-11 to Taylor Fernandes of Guyana, but bounced back with a 11-3, 13-11, 11-1 win over OECS’ Giovanna Alexander.Kion Knight, Bermuda’s lone representative in the boys Under-17 section, lost his first match to Trinidad’s Chad Salandy 8-11, 11-4, 6-11, 4-11.Bermuda had two players in both the Under-19 boys division, Nazhir Smith and Kyler Knight, and Under-19 girls in Emma Keane and Susanna Armano.Smith lost to Stewart St John of Barbados 11-5, 10-12, 5-11, 11-9, 12-14, before beating Knight 15-17, 11-7, 11-8, 11-8. Knight also lost to Zaki Williams of Barbados 5-11, 13-15, 7-11, to remain winless in the competition.Cayman Islands’ Lara Connolly beat Armano 7-11, 7-11, 9-11 in her lone match, while Keane got cross Angelique Jackson of Trinidad 11-3, 11-3, 11-5.Under-19 boys reserve player Beckett Simmons lost to Jamaica’s Julian Morrison 6-11, 4-11, 8-11 to complete the local matches.Competition continues today with singles action before team play starts tomorrow.
