Tennis youngsters head to Dominican Republic
Young tennis players are finalising their preparations as they look to impress at the upcoming JITIC 2013 tournament in the Dominican Republic. The Bermuda players will compete in the Under-14 and Under-16 divisions at the Caribbean’s annual event which showcases tennis talent throughout the Americas, Caribbean and Central American region.Competition is set to start in Santo Domingo on August 3.The Bermuda team, consisting of three players in each division supported by two coaches, includes Courtland Boyle jr, William Boyle and Nicholas Lines in the Under-16s, while Luke Attride-Stirling, Dylon Powell and Benjamin Lines will compete in the Under-14s.Coaches for the two teams are Jerome Bradshaw and Romar Douglas.“This tournament by tradition features the best players in the region in the respective age groups and thus favours players who are in their last year of eligibility,” said Brashaw.“In the Under-16s, this is the last year for Courtland and Billy Boyle, and in the Under-14s this is the last year for Luke Stirling and Dylon Powell.“The first couple of days will feature a round-robin event in pools, and from there players by performance will be placed in either the ‘main draw’ or the ‘consolation draw’.“The overall winners will come from the main draw, so the first goal is to make the main draw.“We go into this tournament with an open mind, to be focused as much as possible and to do our best.”The event will be played throughout the week and will consist of singles and doubles matches. Although the players are representing their countries, it’s not a team event, and they will be garnering individual points and honours. The winners and runners-up in singles will be awarded further support and sponsorship for additional training, and direct entry in future tournaments in the region. The team departs Bermuda on August 1.
