Phillips in final of NY tourney
Promising tennis player Daniel Phillips has reached the singles final in his age group at the Little Mo International Tournament in Forest Hills, New York.The unseeded player stormed into the boys’ under-eight final after recording an emphatic 6-1, 6-0 win over second seed Declan Galligan in the semi-final on the clay surface at the West Side Tennis Club.“Daniel took his performance to another level against a formidable opponent,” said the player’s coach, Sam Maybury. “His performance was flawless.”Phillips, who attends Somerset Primary, will face doubles partner and defending champion Nishesh Basavarareddy of California in tomorrow’s final.Coach Maybury said the youngster was fired up for the big occasion.“Daniel is really looking forward to the final and is peaking at the right time,” the former top player added. “He is really looking forward to it and is ready.”Phillips, who finished runner-up to Basavarareddy at July’s Little Mo event in Colorado, went from strength to strength en route to the final.He beat Mikkel Zinder 6-2, 6-2 in the first round and cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 win over third seed Andrew Hayward of Texas to advance to the last four.“Daniel was burning on all cylinders and his killer instinct was definitely on point,” Maybury said. “He was playing against a difficult opponent so he had to really raise his game.”Also competing in New York is Phillips’ sister Imani and compatriots Tego Bean, Tre Mallory and Jasper Hunt Thomas.Imani reached the semi-final in the girls Under-11 singles where she lost to number one seed Mille Elsborg of Denmark 6-1, 6-0 while Bean upset the seventh seeded Richard Kelly of New York 6-4, 6-3 in his first round match in the Boys Under-12 singles before losing 6-0, 6-3 in the next round against number two seed Ahmed Ramadan.Mallory, son of Bermuda Davis Cup non-playing captain Ricky Mallory, went down 6-2, 6-0 in his first round match against New Yorker Kabir Rajpal in the Boys Under 11 singles while Thomas, who resides in New York, lost 6-1, 6-3 to Japan’s Hikaru Takeda in his first round match in the same division.
