New Labour Day champions to be crowned

A new men’s and women’s champion will be crowned in this year’s Labour Day 5 Mile Road Race.Last year’s top male and female runners, Sean Trott and Hilda Stoney, are not back to defend their titles that will go up for grabs during Monday’s traditional road running season opener.Trott, who won a second straight men’s title last year, is due to travel overseas while Stoney, who ran a personal best (33:10) over the distance en route to victory, no longer resides on the Island.Monday’s event, hosted by Swan’s Running Club, starts and ends in front of Bermuda Industrial Union (BIU) headquarters on Union Street in Hamilton.Walkers and junior boys and girls runners (8-15) will start at 8am while senior boys and girls runners (16-19) will go off with the adult runners at 8:30amWalkers and senior boys and girls runners will compete on the same 5 mile racecourse while the junior boys and girls runners will compete on a shorter one and a half mile racecourse.Race Director, Christine Joell, is looking forward to what promises to be another enjoyable event.“We always want everyone to have fun when they participate in our races,” she said. “And we would like to thank the public for supporting Swan’s Running Club over the years and we look forward to their continued support throughout this race season.”Swan’s Running Club have manage to secure a new sponsor for this year’s Labour Day 5 Mile Road Race.“We are very appreciative to ACE Group for assisting us with this race,” Joell said. “We are definitely happy to have them on-board as our sponsors this year.”
