Tennis team depart for Mexico

Four of Bermuda’s most promising tennis players depart for Monterray, Mexico on Saturday where they will get the opportunity to broaden their horizons on the court.Flying the Island’s banner at the Under-12 Masters competition are Ricky Mallory III, Ben Lines, Kaylah Ming and Imani Phillips.The foursome earned the right to compete in Mexico after helping Bermuda to a third-place finish in the boys’ and girls’ categories at last month’s ITF/GSDF English Caribbean Wilson Under-12 COTECC Team Championships in Jamaica.The upcoming tournament will be held from October 20-26 and will involve countries from both the English and Spanish speaking Caribbean and Central America.“This is the first time for this event and so exposure will be awesome,” said Bermuda coach Steve Bean. “We do expect the level of competition to be higher than in Jamaica and it will be a blessing to see how we do against the best in those regions.”Bermuda’s youngsters have left no stone unturned in their preparations for the trip to Mexico.“We have been training in preparation for this ever since we returned from Jamaica,” added Bean. “And I have witnessed a noticeable improvement in each of our players.”All of the players representing Bermuda are currently sharpening their skills at the ongoing Cadbury Junior Tournament at WER Joell Tennis Stadium.“The match play has been timely for our training because we leave on Saturday,” added former Somerset Trojans footballer and tennis ace Bean.
