Another difficult day for Bermuda
Bermuda slumped to their second straight defeat at the 2014 Junior Davis Cup pre-qualifying tournament in the Dominican Republic yesterday.
The unseeded youngsters went down 3-0 against fifth-ranked El Salvador at the refurbished National Sports Park in Santo Domingo, a result that effectively dashed Bermuda’s hopes of progressing to the final qualifying event to be held in Montreal in late spring.
Tanner Boyle, Bermuda’s No 2, lost to Sebastian Quiros 6-1, 6-1 in the opening singles match that set the tone for the series.
Boyle’s team-mate, Nicholas Lines, again playing in the No 1 slot, offered a bit more resistance in the pivotal second singles match before ultimately losing 6-2, 6-1 to Atilio Flores.
Lines’s defeat clinched the three-match series for unbeaten El Salvador, who are second behind undefeated Aruba, whom they will face next to settle group C. The Central American side then completed the whitewash, Bermuda’s second of the tournament, after Lines and Dylan Powell lost to Flores and Salvador Bolanos 6-0, 6-1 in the doubles.
Bermuda will face Jamaica in their final round-robin match today in a battle to avoid the group’s wooden spoon.
Fifteen countries are represented at the tournament, which consists of three groups of four teams and one group of three.
At the conclusion of the round-robin phase, the top two countries in each group will advance to the main draw, with the rest consigned to a consolation event.
The top country in the main draw will progress to the final qualifying event, to be held from May 8 to 10, when they will join teams from Mexico, United States and Canada.
