Bermuda’s Fed Cup team got off to a losing start against third-seeded Peru in their opening group C fixture in Puerto Rico today.
The Islanders were the heavy underdogs in their first round match against the Peruvians.
Jacklyn Lambert was defeated by Camila Vargas 6-0, 6-0 in the opening match, before Bermuda’s number one seed, Tyler Smith, lost to Patricia Ku Flores 6-2, 6-1.
Smith then teamed up with Tara Lambert in the doubles for a see-saw battle with Camila Vargas and Maria Paula Torres, who won 7-6, 6-3.
Bermuda play Bolivia in their second set of matches tomorrow.
The group winners will progress to a play-off to determine which two countries gain promotion to group one for next year’s tournament.
