Urquhart wins Invitational title
Donna Urquhart of Australia defeated Ireland’s Aisling Blake in Pro Women’s Invitational Tournament final at the Devonshire Courts on Saturday night.
Urquhart, who is ranked No 25 in the world, won in straight sets 12-10, 12-10, 11-2 to condemn Blake to her second successive defeat in the Invitational final, having lost to another Antipodean, Kasey Brown, 12 months ago.
Whereas last year’s competition featured only Blake and Brown in a one-off exhibition game, last week’s tournament also included Nicolette Fernandes, the Guyana and Caribbean champion and world No 13, and Runa Reta, the Bermuda coach, who is a former Canadian champion and world No 29.
Blake, who defeated Fernandes 11-5, 9-11, 11-9, 11-7 in her opening game to reach the final, admitted that Urquhart had simply been too good for her on the night.
“Donna beat me convincingly and was a much better player on the day,” Blake said. “We had two close games and then it was a question of her stepping up. She was a bit more patient with the court than me and made sure the rallies were super long to get me tired.”
Blake, who has played professionally for nine years and is based in Amsterdam, said that she had thoroughly enjoyed her second trip to the Island, having “fallen in love” with Bermuda on her first visit.
“It’s great that they expanded the tournament this year,” said Blake, the world No 33. “The crowd really get involved in the game and the [Bermuda] squash community seemed appreciative of us coming here.
“Last year was my first time in Bermuda and I fell in love with the Island. I was so excited to have been invited back and I’ve managed to see a bit more of the Island as well as help coach some of the kids.”
Fernandes beat Reta 11-6, 11-3, 8-11, 11-13 in Friday’s third-place match.
