Micah Franklin’s memorable Commonwealth Games came to an end last night after losing his singles round-of-32 match against Campbell Grayson, of New Zealand, at the Scotstoun Sports Campus in Glasgow.

Franklin experienced a couple of days that will live long in his memory, carrying the Bermuda flag at Wednesday night’s opening ceremony before securing his maiden Games victory, defeating Michael Kawooya, of Uganda, yesterday morning.

The 21-year-old beat Kawooya, 11-4, 11-4, 9-11, 8-11, 11-4 but came unstuck against Grayson, the twelfth seed, later in the day, losing 11-1, 11-1, 11-4.

Bermuda’s other two squash players at the Games, Nick Kyme and Robbie Maycock, both suffered defeats in their opening matches and will now compete in the consolation plate competition.

Kyme, who was handed a “draw of death” against James Willstrop, the former world No 1 from England, was beaten 11-4, 11-3, 11-4 in what will be a fifth and final appearance at the Games.

Maycock, making his Games debut, also suffered a defeat in his tough match against tenth seed Mohd Nafiizwan Adnan, of Malaysia, 11-2, 11-5, 11-4.

Both players will be in action in today’s plate round of 32, Kyme against Suari Madako Junior Suari, of Papua New Guinea, and Maycock against Ian Rukunya, of Uganda.
