Big effort: Clive Evans leads the way as he collects money during a 100-mile charity walk with friends, one of whom carried a 50kg bag of coal

Clive Evans has only been running for four years, but already his status as one of the racing world’s ‘good guys’ is secure.

Evans and friends are part of a group that takes on long-distance walks for charity in his native Wales.

“I’m part of a team called the ‘Coal Crew’,” Evans says. “We walk to raise money for people who need help with illness. Derek Burton, our friend, walks with a 50-kilogram bag of coal on his back and we all walk with him to raise money in a unique way. We have walked 10, then 26, then 50 — and finally 100 miles. On the 100-miler, we raised £10,000 (approx $14,500) for two children who needed help. We are very proud of what we do.”

The 100-miler took Evans and friends 55 hours to complete.

Evans, 47, also ran three marathons in 2015 in Llanelli, Tenby and Snowdon, all in Wales. His personal best is 3hr 48min set in Tenby.

He lives in the ancient town of Cardigan, which is situated on the estuary of the River Teifi at the base of Cardigan Bay in western Wales. This weekend he is making his first international trip to run.

He is competing in the Bermuda Triangle Full Challenge, running the mile, 10K and marathon. While here, he and his wife, Elaine, will celebrate her 50th birthday. The couple will have the added bonus of seeing their daughter, Heather, a beauty therapist who has lived in Bermuda since March.

“I am planning to travel somewhere once a year now to run a marathon. I haven’t been to Bermuda before, let alone run a marathon there, but I am hoping the climate will be favourable and dry — and I will be taking my daughter’s GoPro camera to film the experience.”
