Married in a race and a honeymoon on the run
After getting married during a half-marathon, it seems only fitting that Canadians Amy Poole and Nicolas Piccott will spend part of their honeymoon competing in the Bermuda Triangle Half Challenge this weekend.
Registered nurse Amy, 30, and 29-year-old marine engineer Nicolas exchanged vows at the Rock ‘n’ Roll Las Vegas Run Thru Wedding in November.
“The actual run in Las Vegas was amazing,” said Amy. “To be able to run down the strip at night is an experience all on its own. At mile three, all the couples either getting married or renewing their vows (I believe it was more than 160 couples this year) stopped and got married in a mass wedding ceremony. The ceremony only took about five minutes and then we were on our way to finish the last ten miles of the half-marathon. Even the weather contributed to the memories by raining on us for the entire length of the wedding. The wedding and run was just what we hoped for — simple and special.”
The Windsor, Ontario residents have both been running for about seven years. Before they met two and a half years ago, Amy concentrated on local road races, while Nicolas took part in obstacle races — but now they run together.
“Together, we have completed a local adventure race, multiple ‘tough mudders’ and other obstacle races, multiple races from 5k to full marathons — and most recently our first 50k ultra race,” said Amy.
“One goal of ours is to run a race on every continent. We are trying to do one international trip a year. So far, we have been able to run a half-marathon on the Great Wall of China and a half-marathon for me and a full marathon for Nic in both Chile and Antarctica. Our next international destination is planned to be Africa where we can run a half/full marathon in a game reserve and have the opportunity to climb Mount Kilimanjaro.”
Nicolas’ race of choice is the full marathon — he has a personal best of 3hr 23min 29sec. Amy prefers the half-marathon; her best time is 1:59:06.
“Even if we don’t physically run the race together we are able to train together with our dog and on race day know that the other is there, somewhere, supporting us and being challenged in the same way,” Amy said.
This weekend, Amy and Nicolas will run the mile, 10K and half-marathon on their first trip to the Island. “We believe in ‘go big or go home’ so we want to make the most of the race weekend, however, it is still our honeymoon and vacation so we don’t really want the recovery that comes with the full marathon,” explained Amy.
“As adventurous as our past trips have been, we wanted our honeymoon to stand out and again, be different. After we decided on an island, we researched marathons that were occurring in the months we wanted to go.
“Bermuda was most appealing with the multiple races. They are obviously the main part of our trip, however, we are looking forward to exploring the Island and its history as well as other possible adventures. There seems to be a lot of stuff to do that would be amazing — biking, kayaking, paddle boarding, sailing, snorkelling, and caves.”
